+ 70. m i. Jakob KILZ, born 18 Jan 1811, died 5 Oct 1872 <See pg. 61>.
23. Susannah (Anna)5 KILTS <See pg. 7> (Johann4, Johann3, Johann2, Hanss1) was born 9 Feb 1750 in Palatine, Montgomery Co., NY, and was christened 18 Feb 1750 in Palatine, Montgomery Co., NY. She was the daughter of Johann Peter KILTS and Anna Maria BELLINGER. Susannah died 14 Dec 1842 in Manheim, Herkimer Co., NY, USA, and was buried 17 Dec 1843 in Manheim, Herkimer Co., NY, USA.
NOTES for Susannah:
BIRTH: Stone Arabia, T-Palatine, Montgomery Co., NY.
BAPTISM: Recorded: Reformed Churc h, Stone Arabia, T-Palatine, Montgomery Co., NY. Parents: "Peter Kils, Anna Maria Dellinger". Sponsors: "Johannes Kils, Appolonia Bellinger".
MARRIAGE: Recorded: Reformed Church, Stone Arabia, T-Palatine, Montgomery Co., NY. "Pieter Snell, Anna Kieltz"
MILITARY: (DKM) Her pension application as a widow of a Revolutionary soldier (National Archives R9897) includes a deposition dated 30 September 1837 from her brother Conrad Kilts stating, "he has been personally acquainted with Peter Snell and Anna Kilts previous to the Revolutionary war and before they were married, and that he...further saith that he is personally known that in the month of March, 1768, the aforesaid Peter Snell with the aforesaid Anna Kilts, daughter of Peter Kilts deceased, were legally and lawfully joined in lawful wedlock by the Rev. Abraham Rosencrantz by whom the marriage ceremony was performed in the Reformed Dutch church in Stone Arabia..."
BIOGRAPHICAL: In his family Bible her son Sefrenes Snell wrote: "Peter Snell my father departed this life July 24, 1804 aged seventy four years one month. Anna Snell, my mother departed this life December 14, 1842 aged ninety two years ten months and five days...they lived in a state of matrimony 36 years, 5 months, 6 days. They together presented to the world 11 children, 8 sons and 3 daughters of whom 9 yet living and they presented to the world 109 children, seventy sons and thirty nine daughters and grandchildren, 426 descendants in all by the time of her death. At a birthday reunion for her, 320 descendants attended." (DKM)
Remarkable as is this case numerically of a thrifty and rapidly extending family, it is quite unnoticeable when compared with the lineage of Mrs. Zimmerman's parents--Peter Snell and Anna Kiltz--Peter Snell surviving the Battle of Oriskany. He died after a long and laborious life, his wife surviving him. Anna Kilts Snell died at the age of 93, leaving then living 426 lineal descendants.
NOTE: A romantic story explains the whole difference (20 years) in birth dates of this couple. Peter used to rock the baby when he was at the ripe age of 20. He declared then he would wait till the baby matured, and then marry her. Especially noteworthy is the fact that he did just that.

NOTE: In GENEALOGY OF THE MOHAWK VALLEY BELLINGERS AND ALLIED FAMILIES,
(Page 17)
Lyle Frederick Bellinger, 1976, she is not listed as "Anna Maria", but as "Appollonia". The will of Peter Kilts dated 25 Jul 1784 mentions daughter Anna Maria, wife of Johannes Empie, Junr, to receive 46 pounds after his decease and my Negro girl slave named "Nan" - proving she was a child of Peter and Anna Maria Bellinger Kilts...in the church record her name is illegible and is read by the Bellinger genealogy, 1976, as Appolonia.
BURIAL: Slate Hill Cemetery, T-Sharon, Schoharie Co., NY USA.
TOMBSTONE: "Maria, his wife, Died 1832 in her 82nd yr".
She married Johannes EMPIE 13 May 1770 in NY, USA. He was born 1742 in Palatine, Montgomery Co., NY. He was the son of Johannes (Empey) EMPIE and Elizabeth SNELL. Johannes died 8 May 1825 in Sharon, Schoharie Co., NY, USA, and was buried 10 May 1825 in Sharon, Schoharie Co., NY, USA.
NOTES for Johannes:
BIRTH/DEATH: Gravestone, Slate Hill Cemetery, "Johannes Empie, d. May 8, 1820 in his 82nd yr, per DAR records. D.K. Martin, "Kilts" genealogy says, "John, died 8 May 1825 in his 82nd year, thus born abt 1742. Becker says died 1825, but born 1738/1739 in 82nd year, which does not compute. AMERICAN ANCESTRY II:36 says he was born 1744, died 1824. Fitzgerld says, "d. May 8, 1825 in 82nd yr." 1825 probably correct (HWW).
MARRIAGE: # 1 - To Hannah or Hannah Eva Wohleben???
# 2 - By 1779 to Anna Maria Kilts
NOTE: David Kendall Martin ra ises the question in his book, THE EIGHTEENTH SNELL FAMILY OF THE MOHAWK VALLEY, p 53, as to whether or not Johannes Empie had a first marriage to a Hannah Wohleben. He writes: "In the Oneida County Historical Society there is a note of F. Deuel that the will of Nicholas Wohleben of Burnetsfield, dated 1773, proved 1783, mentions a daughter, Hannah, wife of John Empie. By 1778 Johannes Empie had married Anna Maria Kilts, who died in 1832 in her 82nd year and is buried with her husband."
(BEG) There is a record in the German Flatts Reformed Church for a child "Johannes, born 20 Feb 1778 to Johannes Empie and Eva, sponsored by Jacob Wohleben and Susannah Flagg." Was this "Eva" the same person as "Hannah" (thus, "Hannah Eva")? The sponsorship by Jacob Wohleben seems to connect this birth with the Hannah Wohleben who married Johannes Empie. But is this the same Johannes Empie who later married Anna Maria Kilts? The problem is that there is no other Johannes Empie of the right age who could fit the circumstances.
(BEG) checked the Ft. Herkimer (German Flatts) Reformed Church records prior to 1800 (after which Johannes and Anna Maria moved to Sharon) and noted that there were entries for both Empie families and other Wohlebens in the same period. For example, Jacob Wohleben and his wife Susannah appear in the birth records for 1795, as does the marriage of Nicholas Wohleben in 1793. An Abraham Wohleben appears as a baptism sponsor in 1777. The birth of Johannes and Maria Kilts' third son Adam is recorded there in 1780, as is that of their daughter Maria in 1782. We also find the marriage of Johannes' nephew, John F. Empie to Katharina Kuhl listed for 1782. All of this tells us that these two families attended this church at about the same time and probably knew one another. But did Johannes marry a Wohleben before he married Anna Maria Kilts?
The question becomes more complicated because according to his gravestone, Johannes's oldest son, John Empie of Sharon, was born 10 Feb 1775. We can find no birth record for him, but that may be due to the devastation of the Revolution, since Stone Arabia and German Flatts were both raided frequently at that period. We know from AMERICAN ANCESTRY II:32 that John of Sharon, b 1775, was the "son of John of Palatine." Land deeds also prove his parentage. But if he was born in 1775 and his father had a child by Hannah Wohleben in 1778, this would make him also a child by the first wife, which is not in the Empie "Kilts" family tradition. Or, is it possible that John of Sharon and the Johannes born in 1778 are one and the same person, only seeming two separate persons due to an error in the recording of the birth and baptism (for example, "1775" should have been written "1778", or vice versa)? This is a puzzle we have been unable to solve, so until more evidence comes to light, we are still
(Page 18)
placing John of Sharon, b 1775 as the eldest son of both Johannes and Anna Maria Kilts.
RESIDENCE: Fitzgerald notes on the Empey Family Chart regarding Johannes Empie, wife Anna Kilts, "This family relocated to Sharon, Schoharie Co., NY, about 1800."
BIOGRAPHICAL: "John G. Empie" article in BIOGRAPHICAL REVIEW mentions John G.'s great-grandfather, Johannes Empie, as follows: "He (John G.) is of French and German ancestry, and the descendant of one of the earliest settlers in Schoharie Co. - his great-grandfather, John Empie, having removed in early manhood from Stone Arabia, Montgomery Co., NY, to the Town of Sharon. A hardworking pioneer, John Empie cleared a farm from the wilderness, and there passed the remainder of his life."
Henry Jones says, MORE PALATINE FAMILIES, p 202, "Johannes, a son of Johannes on Sommer's 1744 List. He md. Anna Maria Kilts, and was buried in Sharon, NY."

Solomon EMPIE, born about 1785 in Palatine, Montgomery Co., NY.IDENTITY: (HWW) We are adding this heretofore unknown child to the family of Johannes and Anna Maria Kilts Empie, based on only a few scraps of evidence. Thus he is a "probable" child of the couple and his existence subject to further scrutiny. The evidence of his existence comes from the obituary of Benjamin Empie, (born 1809, died 7 Oct 1900), the son of Adam Empie. Adam was the 3rd son of Johannes and Anna Maria Kilts. The other known sons of Johannes were John, Peter and Conrad. The obituary from the COBLESKILL INDEX, (date unknown) reads in part:"Benj. Empie was a worthy descendant of sturdy stock. His father was AdamEmpie, who with his brothers John, Peter and Solomon, came from Stone Arabia and purchased a large tract of land in the town of Sharon."We think it is probable that Conrad, b. 1791, did not come with his brothers to Sharon on that trip because he would have been only about 9-10 years old at the time, remaining with his parents in the Stone Arabia area until the land was purchased and the family ready to move. This leaves us with an unaccounted for brother named Solomon, who came to Sharon and then seemingly disappeared from all records, except that two younger Empies, also named Solomon, Solomon Empie b. 1810, who married Catharine Kilts, and Solomon Empie, b. 1843, who married Charlotte Becker turned up in later records with no parentage given. Was their ancestor Adam's brother, "Solomon?" Or was the Solomon, born 1810, a son of Peter Empie, who
(Page 19)
named him after his brother, Solomon? (There is a time gap in Peter's family where Solomon, b. 1810 would fit in nicely, and we have placed him there, at least for now.) It's a real puzzle.Since this single record does name Solomon as a brother of John, Peter and Adam, we are doing the same. He would proably have been born in the 7 year gap between the births of Maria (1782) and Elizabeth (1789), which would make him between the ages of 12 and 17 around 1800, when the family is said to have moved to Sharon. We know they were in Sharon by 1807 because of a deed dated 24 Jun 1807 which transferred some of the Empie farm from "Johannes Empea to his son, John, Jr." (known as John Empie of Sharon). Thus we're picking a probable birth date of about 1785, and old enough to go on the buying trip with his brothers. If any of our readers know more about him, please let us know.+ 87. f vi. NOTE: This Nicholas is difficult to place in the Kilts family, but David Kendall Martin thinks that he belongs in this family. In David's book, THE MOHAWK VALLEY KILTS FAMILY IN THE EIGHTEENTH CENTURY, 1985, he has a page and a half discussion as to why he thinks that Nicholas belongs in the family of Johannes Kilts. In my extensive research into this problem I have not found any reason to support nor refute this placement into this family. Maybe someone else will help with this situation. (HWW)
